Metal Roofs With Ice Dams & Snow Guards
Ice Dams
Ice dams are an essential part of your roof if you live in an area that gets snow. Since metal roofing sheds water and snow so well, ice and snow can build up at the edge of your roof and fall off in a big chunk, potentially injuring someone below. They also help to prevent the forming of icicles which are very dangerous when they fall. Ice dams look similar to snow guards, except lightly smaller and in a pattern across the lower edge of the roof, about 12+ inches from the gutter.
Snow Guards
Snow guards act as barriers to keep piles of snow and ice from sliding off of your roof. They are particularly helpful in areas that get large amounts of snow, as the snow that can accumulate on the roof can be a very dangerous thing when it finally dislodges. With a snow guard, you don’t have to worry about this because the snow gets caught against the guard and is forced to melt off instead of falling.
Proper Installation Is The Key To Success
When installing your snow guard or ice barrier onto a metal roof, there are multiple things that need to be taken into consideration for optimal performance.
First, is the need to position the ice guard or snow dam far enough away from the edge of the roof so that it can perform how it was designed to. Wrong positioning can lead to ice and snow falling off of the roof much more than it should and end up rendering the installation useless.
Second, is that you have to realize you are drilling holes into the metal panels which can comes with many problems. These problems are leaks from rain and snow that can get under the metal roofing panels if these penetrations aren’t watertight. Some contractors aren’t experienced enough to get these screws water tight so make sure you are hiring a reputable metal roofing contractor such as ourselves. Poor installation could end up costing you big time in the long run.
